GENDER EQUALITY OR GENDER EQUITY?

The issue of gender equality is an all too common one in this century of well educated women all around the world but most especially in Africa. The past couple years between the up-rise of women like Chimamanda Adichie and Beyonce  who have made the world know their stand on being independent women willing to do and be whatever they want without fear of what other people think about their decisions and actions, there has been an influx of other young women who are equally motivated to be independent. That i applaud.
But amongst these women there are those who are totally misguided and do not understand what it means to be a feminist or to fight for the woman's right.
Feminism is a range of movements (ideological, social, political) with a goal; to achieve equal political, personal, social, economic and educational rights for women. It is not an excuse for women to be saucy, narcissistic or uncultured. (especially the African woman) we  have a reputation as women of wisdom, culture and substance. Being a feminist should in no way take that away.
That said, Every woman has a right to as many opportunities as are available to any man, we are people too. with even more distinct qualities. we deserve the right to be political rulers, we deserve to be religious leaders, we deserve education and employment opportunities because believe it or not women are more passionate and dedicated to whatever we put our minds to and no one should be permitted to rub us of our rights simply because we bleed a couple of days every month and they perceive us as weaker. (keep in mind one man's weakness is another man's strength).
Women;
we are not the same as the men, never have been, never will be. Both human but totally different. we bleed every month, we get cramps,we get pregnant, we breastfeed. we are nurturers by nature. therefore our needs are quite different from that of the man. We need maternity leaves from work, we need a day or so off for cramps. If we keep fighting for gender equality without really understanding it we lose these little normal exceptions. In a perfectly gender equalized society you do not get maternity leave, you get off work and head straight to the labor room to have a baby, in the home situation, there's a 50/50 split of monetary requirements and home chores. your husband doesn't get to be the only one cutting the grass around the house anymore, or changing the lightbulb or switching on the generator and doing all the heavy lifting, you also do all of these. I don't know about other ladies but personally i don't think i'm willing to be the head figure of my family or to let my husband cook n bath my kids everyday (we all know how careful men can be). All things considered shouldn't we be fighting for gender equity?
A world where allocation of resources and decision making goes fairly to men and women without discrimination based on sex but on intellect, experience and capability. Gender equity requires that both women and men be provided with opportunities that meet their DISTINCTIVE needs and interests. political, social or educational.
There are certain things we cannot fight God has made us the way we are. We are women full of compassion, full of love and most importantly so much wisdom. embrace it and fight right.

so. GENDER EQUALITY OR GENDER EQUITY ??

I AM AT RISK OF STDs YET I'M NOT ALLOWED TO ADVOCATE SAFER SEX??? WOMEN, TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR SEXUAL AND REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH

ladies, is your man always insistent on not using a condom during sex even when he knows you're not safe?? then this is for you.
I've had conversations with women whose men would rather not have sex with them than use a condom knowing fully well the woman stands a chance of getting pregnant (when she is not ready for a baby) or when she has thrush or any other uncomfortable infection. (this might also sound strange to some women who have been in smooth and understanding relationships).
A few months back i was at a clinic in one of the north central states and a woman had put to bed but the baby was born with a  twisted arm and bent ears. While the doctor was trying to straighten the arm and ears the mother stood by the side in tears at the sight of how much pain her baby was going through and i started to console her when the doctor said 'leave her she needs to cry'. Apparently she had warned the couple about complications if the baby was pushed out through the vagina and advised that a CS be carried out, but the husband had refused saying he wouldn't want his wife to have scars. what a reason!
what kind of man will put both the lives of his wife and child at risk for a reason so trivial and petty? and what kind of woman will let a man (husband or not) put her baby's life at risk.
These cases are everywhere, cheating spouses who won't use condoms, husbands who won't
let their wives access family planning services etc.
The reason why women still go through such is 'because we do not know we are entitled to sexual and reproductive health care services and that is to be blamed on our parents (yes! i said so) and the African society where women are brought up to be 110% subservient to the men. A society where a  couple married for 4 years have no child and everyone assumes it's the woman's fault, family members bring a new wife for the husband. Why isn't a new husband found for the wife instead?? (if blame must be assigned)..
The reason behind this long epistle is this.. women!! you have a right to protect yourself. if you don't no one else can. That is why you hear men say 'why did she let herself get pregnant'.. and guess what? they are right! its your life, take charge of it
